Progress never comes from settling. Those who change the world do so because they look at how things are and envision ways they could be better. That’s how our company came about in the first place. 3D Revit files used to take days to complete. Often the rendered results were not user friendly, and yet many people settled. VIMtrek President Arol Wolford, however, sought to find a better way.

Arol and his collaborators developed a platform based around the Unity game engine. It not only provided beautiful BIM models that rendered quickly, but also allowed for free movement and multiple users at the same time. They changed the way we are able to experience BIM models – from an interaction that required extensive knowledge to one that could be used by anyone who could play a video game. Again, many viewed this progress as the incredible step it was, and settled there. But we continued to charge forward.

Our company, VIMaec, spun out of VIMtrek in order to bring virtual reality to the design and construction market, using the VIMtrek product VIM. Through this process, we created VIM VR, which is unique in that it integrates BIM and partners with Samsung Business. It is able to provide a fully immersive virtual reality experience. Imagine the thrill, as an architect, of being able to design a building and then step inside it before it has ever been built.

While exploration into virtual reality and augmented reality has been around for quite some time, it is only recently they have been recognized as the incredible tools they are – tools to help lower costs, manage necessary data and encourage collaboration between experts at every stage of the building process, from day one. Besides, the experience is just plain cool. You are able to put on VR equipped goggles and wander around a building. Whenever you want to explore a particular element of the design, the information you need pops into view. This includes elements such as estimation and sustainability data, allowing you to make critical decisions early in the process that will save time and money later on.

Even today, we at VIMaec refuse to settle. We are constantly developing partnerships and exploring new applications for the VIM platform. We are now working with sector specialist technology distributor SYNNEX in order to expand our client base further. From improving Revit 3D rendering, to allowing for integrated and easy to use BIM modeling, and now to AR and VR applications, we’ve come a long way since Arol Wolford kicked off this innovation five years ago. We cannot wait to see where VIMaec is able to go in the next five.
